I'm one of only five people in all of fandom who's even read the thing, but it OWNS me
Have you ever wished that a particular fic that you wrote could have received just a little more attention? I think every writer who ventures outside mainstream pairings in popular fandoms must have this problem at some stage.
Slowly Dying Embers is my favourite of all of my fics. It affected me the most when I wrote it. It marked the successful completion of my efforts in Lusty Month of May 2007 (which was an effort even as it was good fun, let me tell you). It is probably the most unique fic I've ever written (and is certainly the most unique pairing I've written). And that's the catch, isn't it? Slowly Dying Embers is a Remus/Florean Fortescue fic. Yeah, I know. WTF, right? Except that my pride in this fic came from the fact that I really made myself believe in the pairing, which is actually pretty rare. Unfortutately, since the pairing is so rare, not many readers were very interested in giving me a chance to convince them of the pairing as well. So although the fic absolutely tore my heart out and pwned me, and although it's my favourite of my sixty or so fics (not to mention drabbles and such), it's also my most underappreciated fic. In the nine months or so since it's been posted, only about three people have reviewed it. And that's fine, because I expected it from the moment I started writing it. You can't write a pairing that's quite as rare as that and expect it to be popular. I am, in fact, extremely grateful for those few people who have read the fic and let me know what they though (and also for those who simply read the fic, though I couldn't possibly say how many people fall into that category).
I bring this up not to whine about injustice or whatever, but to lead into a request of sorts.
I'm at that stage where I really want something powerful or 'classic' to read, but I've read pretty much all the fics in the HP fandom that are often identified as the best out there. As such, I'm looking for someone to recommend to me a fic that really got to them, but which isn't one of those fics you see on every second rec list (you know the ones). And yes, feel free to pimp your own fics to me. As long as it has a reasonable standard of writing, I'm open to pretty much anything. Except Snape/Hermione. For the love of god, don't rec me that.
