SUMMARY: There's a weight on your shoulders, heavy and unrelenting, bearing down upon you until you gasp and collapse and can't breathe. Moving on is easy. Except when it isn't.
MY THOUGHTS: You might call me a little biased, because this fic was written for me for the ![[info]](http://www.insanejournal.com/img/community.gif) hpvalensmut 2008 exchange. However, even if this hadn't been written specifically to suit my kinks, I would really have enjoyed the premise alone.
The fic is fairly short and is written in 2nd-person POV, but don't let that put you off. I don't generally like that style of writing myself, but here it was used so well that I honestly can't imagine wanting the fic to be written any other way. The style and pace are wonderful; it's simple and there's a perfect contrast between the angsty, the sweet and the disturbing moments.
As for the content itself, if you've ever wished there was a Harry/Neville post-war fic out there that was neither pure fluff nor incredibly dark and non-con, this is the fic for you. Harry and Neville are both jaded war veterans whose relationship is angsty and awkward and just a little bit angry. If you ignore the epilogue (as most of us do), this is the sort of situation that I could really buy as a follow-up to DH. |

Harry has killed off Voldie, and the ministry is afraid of his power, concerned he's unstable and demands he bond with someone who can control his power or enable him to do so. Harry is very uninterested in the idea and fights it. The Ministry casts a spell because whoever he bonds with must have complementary magic. The complement is Snape who is sitting in Azkaban, for murder. They offer Snape a deal if he will do it, and pretty much force Harry to do it. Bonus if it's Umbridge who finds the complement spell.

DISCLAIMER: J.K. Rowling and her many richer-than-thou affiliates own Harry Potter and his world. This fic may paraphrase certain parts of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince at times, especially in the beginning. I attribute 99% of the credit for those parts to the aforementioned parties, though I’d like to take it home and call it mine.
AUTHOR’S NOTES: Written for the hp_fairytales challenge for the prompt “Prince Ivan and the Grey Wolf”, and thus contains elements of the plot of that fairytale. The references to that story are, however, reasonably vague throughout this fic, so don’t expect a Harry-Potterised retelling. Begins toward the end of HBP, but veers off in a slightly different direction thanks to a few changes in Harry’s past. And yes, be warned, this story, like so many others at the moment, does feature Horcrux-hunting, though I hope that I’ve put something of an original spin on it.
